Case Studies in Freemium: Pandora, Dropbox, Evernote, Automattic and MailChimp

To be honest, at the best of times freemium feels like an overly idealistic business model, which relies heavily on building a big enough audience. In this case study, all of the founders that commented noted that freemium is a numbers game, since only a very small percentage of those users convert to a paid / premium option.

My question however is: Where does every startup find millions of users?
